MACBETH Synopsis
Macbeth, a celebrated Scottish general, returns victorious from
battle alongside his friend Banquo. On their journey home, they
encounter three mysterious witches who prophesy that Macbeth
will become Thane of Cawdor and eventually King of Scotland,
while Banquo’s descendants will one day rule. When Macbeth is
immediately granted the title of Thane of Cawdor, he begins to
wonder if the rest of the prophecy might also come true.
After King Duncan announces that he will visit Macbeth’s castle,
Lady Macbeth encourages her husband to act on the witches’
prediction. Together they murder Duncan and frame others for the
crime. Macbeth is crowned king, but fear of losing power leads him
to arrange the murder of Banquo. Although Banquo is killed, his son
Fleance escapes.
As suspicion and unrest spread throughout Scotland, Macbeth
becomes increasingly dependent on the witches’ prophecies.
Seeking answers, he returns to them and receives a new set of
predictions that seem to guarantee his safety. Believing himself
protected, Macbeth orders further acts of violence, including the
slaughter of Macduff’s family.
Meanwhile, Malcolm, Duncan’s son and rightful heir, gathers support
in England. Joined by Macduff and other Scottish nobles, he prepares
to challenge Macbeth’s rule. As Malcolm’s army advances toward
Dunsinane, Lady Macbeth is troubled by the events that have
brought her and Macbeth to power.
The opposing forces meet in battle, and the witches’ prophecies
begin to reveal their true meanings. Macbeth confronts Macduff in a
final duel as Malcolm’s forces take control of the castle. In the end,
Macbeth is defeated, Malcolm is crowned King of Scotland, and order
is restored to the kingdom.
